The Children's Observation Hub

The Children’s Observation Hub is an enhanced access service for poorly children in Wakefield.

The hub acts as a primary care based option for parents who might otherwise take their ill child to A&E, the hospital or phone 111.

It offers late afternoon, evening and weekend appointments and can be accessed by phoning your usual GP Practice.

If your child is ill, you should still contact your GP practice and they can refer you to the Hub.  If your practice is closed, you will be diverted to GP Care Wakefield who can also refer you to the hub if needed.  See below for the hours that the Hub itself is open.

What happens at the hub?

Local GPs and healthcare staff work in the hub and will help you to safely monitor and care for your child, with the aim of keeping you at home.

Your child will have a first assessment – this could be in person, online or over the phone depending upon what is happening with your child.

After your child’s first assessment:

If your child is doing well and can be discharged from the hub, you will be given a day pass so you can still call us directly for help if you have any further concerns.
If your child's symptoms need monitoring for a bit longer, the hub team will phone you to check up on your child. This could be up to three times whilst the hub is open and depending upon your child's symptoms.
If we need to see your child in person, we will ask you to come to one of our GP Care sites located across Wakefield. We will text you the address. Visit the GP Care page to find the location of these sites.
